The word rapture does not appear in the World English Bible or the King James Version (0 verses). It comes from the Latin rapiemur, the Vulgate's rendering of 'we will be caught up' in 1 Thessalonians 4:17, and 'caught up' appears in 5 verses of the World English Bible. The central passages are 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 and 1 Corinthians 15:51-52, where believers who are alive are changed and taken to meet the Lord in the air. Christians disagree on the timing: before the tribulation, in the middle, at the end, or as one event with Christ's return. Jesus says no one knows the day or hour (Matthew 24:36). The verses below are the ones every view relies on.

"For the Lord himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with God’s trumpet. The dead in Christ will rise first, then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air. So we will be with the Lord forever."

"But we don’t want you to be ignorant, brothers, concerning those who have fallen asleep, so that you don’t grieve like the rest, who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep in Jesus. For this we tell you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will in no way precede those who have fallen asleep."
"But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep."
"Behold, I tell you a mystery. We will not all sleep, but we will all be changed, in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised incorruptible, and we will be changed."

"But immediately after the oppression of those days, the sun will be darkened, the moon will not give its light, the stars will fall from the sky, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken; and then the sign of the Son of Man will appear in the sky. Then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of the sky with power and great glory. He will send out his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they will gather together his chosen ones from the four winds, from one end of the sky to the other."
"Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other."

"Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. "Now, brothers, concerning the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and our gathering together to him, we ask you not to be quickly shaken in your mind, and not be troubled, either by spirit, or by word, or by letter as if from us, saying that the day of Christ has already come. Let no one deceive you in any way. For it will not be, unless the rebellion comes first, and the man of sin is revealed, the son of destruction,"
"Now we beseech you, brethren, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, and by our gathering together unto him, That ye be not soon shaken in mind, or be troubled, neither by spirit, nor by word, nor by letter as from us, as that the day of Christ is at hand. The word is not, but the idea rests on 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17, where believers who are alive are 'caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air', and on 1 Corinthians 15:51-52. Whether this is a separate event before the tribulation or part of Christ's single return is the disagreement.
From the Latin rapiemur in the Vulgate's 1 Thessalonians 4:17, which translates the Greek harpazo, 'to seize or snatch away'. English Bibles render it 'caught up'. The modern pre-tribulation teaching spread in the 1800s through John Nelson Darby and the Scofield Reference Bible.
No. Jesus says that nobody knows the day or hour, not the angels or the Son, only the Father (Matthew 24:36), and that his coming will be like a thief in the night (1 Thessalonians 5:2). Verses that set a date are not supported by any passage.
Pre-tribulation (believers are taken before the tribulation), mid-tribulation, post-tribulation (believers are caught up and meet Christ as he returns), and views that see no separate event. Verses such as Revelation 3:10 and Matthew 24:29-31 are used on different sides.
