Random Bible verse generator
Press the button for a random Bible verse. By default it draws from 748 encouraging verses (hope, strength, peace, comfort and 47 more everyday topics). Switch to all 2,055 verses on our 165 topic lists or to all 31,102 verses of the King James Version (31,098 in the World English Bible), and narrow the draw to one topic, testament or book. Each verse comes in the WEB and the KJV.

The generator in numbers
Every figure is counted from the verse text and our topic lists when the site is built.
Where a whole-Bible draw lands
Every verse has the same chance, so a book's odds equal its share of the 31,102 KJV verses. Psalms alone is 7.9% of the Bible; the ten longest books hold 44.1% of all verses.
The rarest draws: 2 John (13 verses, 0.04%), 3 John (14 verses, 0.05%), Obadiah (21 verses, 0.07%). All 66 books: books of the Bible.
Where the topic-list verses come from
The 2,055 topic-list verses lean toward the books people quote most. Psalms supplies 367 of them (17.9%), against 7.9% of the whole Bible.

Questions about the random verse generator
How does the random Bible verse generator work?
Each press asks the server for one verse picked with equal odds from the pool you chose: 748 encouraging verses, all 2,055 verses on our topic lists, or every one of the 31,102 verses in the King James Version. Filters narrow the pool first, then one verse is drawn from what is left.
Is every verse in the Bible equally likely?
In whole-Bible mode, yes: each of the 31,102 KJV verses has a 1 in 31,102 chance. That makes long books more likely: Psalms holds 2,461 verses, so 7.9% of draws land there, while 2 John (13 verses) comes up 0.04% of the time.
Why draw from the topic lists instead of the whole Bible?
Only 6.6% of the 31,102 KJV verses are on our topic lists, so a whole-Bible draw usually lands outside them, and the verses outside them include genealogies, censuses and temple measurements. The topic lists hold verses people look up for a reason, so a draw from them is more likely to be a verse you can use today. The default, encouraging verses, keeps to the 51 everyday topics such as strength, anxiety, love and grief and leaves out lists on sin and disputed questions, plus 50 verses we read by hand and dropped because they read as judgment or need their surrounding verses. 326 of the 2,055 topic-list verses sit on three or more of our lists.
Which Bible translation does the generator use?
The World English Bible (WEB) and the King James Version (KJV). Both are in the public domain, so the full text can be shown and copied. Use the WEB/KJV buttons to switch.
Is this the same as a verse of the day?
No. This page gives a new verse every time you press the button. The verse of the day is one verse for everyone, chosen by the date and changed at midnight Eastern Time.
Can I get a random verse from one book or testament?
Yes. Pick a testament or a book and the draw stays inside it. The Old Testament holds 74% of all KJV verses, so an unfiltered whole-Bible draw lands there about 74 times in 100.
How the verses and counts were gathered
Topic-list verses are the single-verse cards on our topic pages (passages of two or more verses are left out), each checked word for word against the World English Bible source file, with the King James text beside it; a verse on several lists counts once. Encouraging verses are the whole-sentence verses (none that start or end mid-sentence) on at least one of 51 everyday topics: hope, faith, guidance, protection, blessings, provision, trust, prayer, salvation, grace, mercy, gods love, new beginnings, worship, holy spirit, identity in christ, eternal life, faithfulness, freedom, love, forgiveness, kindness, family, friendship, compassion, unity, strength, wisdom, patience, humility, courage, contentment, perseverance, purpose, truth, serving others, healing, rest, peace, anxiety, comfort, gratitude, joy, thanksgiving, encouragement, worry, fear, hard times, stress, loneliness, grief. We then dropped 50 verses that read as judgment on the wicked, narrative asides or half an argument. Whole-Bible draws read the full public-domain KJV and WEB text (the files bible-api.com serves, github.com/seven1m/open-bibles). The draw uses the server's random number generator with equal odds for every verse left after the filters.
Counted by Bible Says About from the full public-domain text of the King James Version (1769 edition) and the World English Bible. Verse text only: headings and psalm titles are left out. A word is a run of letters: a hyphenated name like Beer-sheba counts as two, and an apostrophe stays inside its word (LORD'S is one). Matching ignores capital letters. Data compiled 2026-10-03.
