Names of the Holy Spirit
The Bible calls the Holy Spirit the Spirit of God, the Spirit of the LORD, the Spirit of Christ, the Spirit of truth, the Comforter, the Spirit of adoption, the eternal Spirit and the seven Spirits of God. This page lists 27 names and titles. The King James Version says "Holy Ghost" 90 times and "Holy Spirit" 7 times.
Updated October 25, 2026. Counts are from the King James Version (KJV) and the World English Bible (WEB), whole Bible unless a row says otherwise. The bare count of the phrase, verse by verse, is on the word page for Holy Spirit; this page lists the names and titles.
Every name and title of the Holy Spirit, with counts
The table lists 27 names and titles the Bible gives the Holy Spirit, with how often each appears in the King James Version and the World English Bible and a key verse checked in both. 5 rows are marked "readings differ": the verse does not itself say whose spirit it is, and readers disagree on whether it names the Holy Spirit.
| # | Name or title | Testament (KJV) | KJV | WEB | Key verse |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | the Holy Ghost (Holy Spirit) KJV: "the Holy Ghost; the Holy Spirit". WEB: "the Holy Spirit". The KJV column adds its Holy Ghost and Holy Spirit together; the split is in the section below. Psalm 51:11 ("thy holy spirit") is counted though the KJV prints both words in lower case. | Both | 97 | 96 | Matthew 28:19 |
| 2 | the Spirit of God KJV: "the Spirit of God". WEB: "the Spirit of God; God's Spirit". Includes "the holy Spirit of God" (Ephesians 4:30). Raw count: Job 27:3, "the spirit of God is in my nostrils", is counted. "Spirits of God" (Revelation) is not. | Both | 26 | 26 | Genesis 1:2 |
| 3 | the Spirit of the LORD KJV: "the Spirit of the LORD; the Spirit of the Lord". WEB: "Yahweh's Spirit; the Spirit of the Lord". Where the KJV prints LORD in capitals the WEB prints Yahweh. Includes "the Spirit of the Lord GOD" (Isaiah 61:1). Raw count: Isaiah 40:7, "the spirit of the LORD bloweth upon it", is counted in the KJV; the WEB reads "Yahweh's breath" there. | Both | 31 | 28 | Judges 3:10 |
| 4 | the Spirit KJV: "the Spirit". "The Spirit" standing alone, with a capital S and not followed by "of", at the start of a sentence too (Romans 8:16). The WEB prints the capital in more verses, including Old Testament ones (Numbers 11:25). | New | 82 | 117 | Acts 16:7 |
| 5 | the Spirit of Christ KJV: "the Spirit of Christ". Romans 8:9 uses "the Spirit of God" and "the Spirit of Christ" in one sentence. The other verse is 1 Peter 1:11. | New | 2 | 2 | Romans 8:9 |
| 6 | the Spirit of Jesus Christ KJV: "the Spirit of Jesus Christ". The only verse in either translation with "Spirit of Jesus". | New | 1 | 1 | Philippians 1:19 |

| 12 | the Comforter KJV: "the Comforter". WEB: "the Counselor". Counted in John's Gospel only: the KJV's other Comforter verses (Ecclesiastes 4:1, Lamentations 1:9, 1:16) are about a human comforter. The same Greek word is "advocate" (KJV) and "Counselor" (WEB) in 1 John 2:1, used of Jesus Christ. | New | 4 | 4 | John 14:26 |
| 13 | the Spirit of adoption KJV: "the Spirit of adoption". Set against "the spirit of bondage" earlier in the verse. | New | 1 | 1 | Romans 8:15 |

| 25 | the spirit of judgment and the spirit of burningreadings differ KJV: "the spirit of judgment, and ... the spirit of burning". WEB: "the spirit of justice, and ... the spirit of burning". Counted as "spirit of burning". The verse does not say whose spirit; readers differ on whether it names God's Spirit. | Old | 1 | 1 | Isaiah 4:4 |
| 26 | the spirit of grace and of supplicationsreadings differ KJV: "the spirit of grace and of supplications". WEB: "the spirit of grace and of supplication". God says "I will pour" it out. The verse does not say whose spirit; readers differ on whether it names God's Spirit. | Old | 1 | 1 | Zechariah 12:10 |

Rows overlap: Ephesians 4:30, "the holy Spirit of God", counts under the first row and under the Spirit of God. "Testament" is where the King James Version uses the name. The Old Testament names of God are on the names of God, and the titles of Jesus on the names of Jesus.
Holy Ghost or Holy Spirit: why does the King James Version say Ghost?
The King James Version says "Holy Ghost" because in its English "ghost" still meant a spirit or soul, not a phantom. The Online Etymology Dictionary entry for "ghost" says Old English gast meant "soul, spirit, life" in Biblical use, that in Christian writing it rendered Latin spiritus, "a sense preserved in Holy Ghost", and that the sense "disembodied spirit of a dead person" is attested from the late 1300s. Wikipedia's King James Version article says the translation was published in 1611 and contains "a large number of archaisms and false friends", words that look familiar but carry older meanings.
By Bible Says About's count of both full texts (October 25, 2026), the King James Version says "Holy Ghost" 90 times (most in Acts, 42) and "Holy Spirit" only 7 times, 3 of them in the Old Testament. The World English Bible says "Holy Spirit" 96 times and never "Holy Ghost".
The KJV's 7 "Holy Spirit" verses are Psalm 51:11, Isaiah 63:10, Isaiah 63:11, Luke 11:13, Ephesians 1:13, Ephesians 4:30 and 1 Thessalonians 4:8. The Greek does not change between the two spellings: Bible Hub's interlinear for Luke 11:13, where the KJV says "the Holy Spirit", has Pneuma Hagion, and its interlinear for Matthew 28:19, where the KJV says "the Holy Ghost", has the same two words, Hagiou Pneumatos. Two verses have the phrase in the KJV but not the WEB: Matthew 12:31 and 1 John 5:7. The WEB reads "the Spirit" in Matthew 12:31, and its 1 John 5:7 lacks the KJV's "the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost". One verse has it in the WEB only: Luke 10:21, where the KJV says Jesus "rejoiced in spirit".
The King James Version itself shows the older meaning. It prints "ghost" 109 times: 90 in "Holy Ghost" and the other 19 in phrases about dying, as in "Abraham gave up the ghost" (Genesis 25:8) and Jesus "yielded up the ghost" (Matthew 27:50, WEB "yielded up his spirit"). The World English Bible uses "ghost" 2 times, both in the modern sense: the disciples see Jesus walking on the sea and think he is a ghost (Matthew 14:26 and Mark 6:49), where the KJV says "a spirit". For every "Holy Spirit" verse, see the Holy Spirit word count.
What does Comforter mean? The Paraclete in John
Comforter is the King James Version's word for the Greek parakletos, which Thayer's Greek Lexicon on Bible Hub (Strong's 3875) defines as "summoned, called to one's side, especially called to one's aid", and also "one who pleads another's cause before a judge". Bible Hub notes the word occurs five times, all in John's writings: four times in John's Gospel for the Holy Spirit, and once in 1 John 2:1 for Jesus Christ, where the KJV says "advocate". The World English Bible says "Counselor" in all five.
KJV: And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever;
WEB: "he will give you another Counselor"
KJV: But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you.
WEB: "the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name"
KJV: But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me:
WEB: "When the Counselor has come"
KJV: Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.
WEB: "the Counselor won't come to you"
John 14:16 calls him "another Comforter", and two verses later Jesus says "I will not leave you comfortless" (WEB "orphans"). The King James Version also uses comforter in Ecclesiastes 4:1, Lamentations 1:9 and Lamentations 1:16, for a human comforter; those 3 are not counted in the table, which has 4 for John. The four chapters are in the Gospel of John.
Names of the Holy Spirit in the Old Testament and the New
The Old Testament mostly says "the Spirit of the LORD" and "the Spirit of God"; the New Testament adds the Holy Ghost, the Spirit of Christ, the Spirit of truth and the Comforter. By the King James count, 6 of the 27 names are Old Testament only, 18 New Testament only and 3 appear in both.
- "The Spirit of the LORD": 26 times in the King James Old Testament and 5 in the New, most in Judges (7), where it comes on the judges, as on Othniel in Judges 3:10. The World English Bible writes "Yahweh's Spirit" where the KJV prints LORD in capitals.
- "The Spirit of God": 14 times in the King James Old Testament, from Genesis 1:2, and 12 in the New (WEB 14 and 12, counting "God's Spirit").
- "Holy Spirit" is in the Old Testament 3 times, the same in both translations: Psalm 51:11 and Isaiah 63:10-11. "Holy Ghost" is never in the King James Old Testament; in the New, Acts has 42 of its 90, more than any other book.
- The Old Testament-only names include thy good spirit (Nehemiah 9:20) and the three pairs of Isaiah 11:2, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, of counsel and might, and of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD. Isaiah 4:4 and Zechariah 12:10 are marked "readings differ". The book page for Isaiah has its chapters and counts.
- "The Spirit" standing alone with a capital S: 0 times in the King James Old Testament and 82 in the New. The World English Bible has it 17 times in the Old Testament, as in Numbers 11:25, because it capitalises verses the KJV prints with a small s.
What are the seven Spirits of God in Revelation?
The seven Spirits of God are named in four verses, Revelation 1:4, 3:1, 4:5 and 5:6, and Revelation does not explain them; commentators read them in more than one way.
Revelation 1:4 sends grace and peace "from the seven Spirits which are before his throne", alongside God and Jesus Christ. Revelation 3:1 says Christ "hath the seven Spirits of God, and the seven stars", the message to the church in Sardis (see the seven churches of Revelation). Revelation 4:5 calls seven lamps of fire before the throne "the seven Spirits of God", and Revelation 5:6 says the Lamb's seven eyes "are the seven Spirits of God sent forth into all the earth". Zechariah 4 has seven lamps (4:2) and seven that "are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth" (4:10).
The commentaries collected on Bible Hub's page for Revelation 1:4 give these readings:
- Barnes' Notes says "it is still impossible to determine with certainty its meaning", and lists the main opinions, starting with the view that it refers to God himself.
- Matthew Poole's Commentary reports: "Some think they are seven angels", pointing to the seven angels "which stood before God" in Revelation 8:2, and to Zechariah 4:2 and 4:10.
- Poole himself reads them as the Holy Ghost, "who, though but one spiritual Being, yet exerteth his influence many ways". The Jamieson-Fausset-Brown commentary reads them as "The Holy Spirit in His sevenfold (that is, perfect, complete, and universal) energy", and the Geneva Study Bible note reads "from the Holy Spirit".
The phrase has a capital S in all 4 verses in both translations. The book page for Revelation has its chapters and counts.
What symbols does the Bible use for the Holy Spirit?
The Bible sets the Spirit beside 8 pictures: dove, fire, wind, breath, water, oil and anointing, seal and earnest (down payment). Each card quotes the verses that make the link, in the King James Version with the World English Bible wording below.
Matthew 3:16 (KJV): And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
WEB: "the Spirit of God descending as a dove"
Luke 3:22 (KJV): And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased.
WEB: "the Holy Spirit descended in a bodily form like a dove"
At the baptism of Jesus. All four Gospels tell it (Mark 1:10, John 1:32), and these four are the only New Testament verses with "dove" in the singular, in either translation.
Acts 2:3 (KJV): And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them.
WEB: "Tongues like fire appeared"
Luke 3:16 (KJV): John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
WEB: "He will baptize you in the Holy Spirit and fire"
Tongues "like as of fire" sit on each disciple at Pentecost (Acts 2:3-4). John the Baptist pairs the Holy Ghost with fire; the KJV has the pair in Matthew 3:11 as well, where the WEB has the Holy Spirit alone. Revelation 4:5 calls seven lamps of fire "the seven Spirits of God".
John 3:8 (KJV): The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit.
WEB: "The wind blows where it wants to ... So is everyone who is born of the Spirit"
Acts 2:2 (KJV): And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting.
WEB: "the rushing of a mighty wind"
Jesus compares the Spirit to the wind in John 3:8; the sound "as of a rushing mighty wind" comes just before the believers are "filled with the Holy Ghost" (Acts 2:4).
John 20:22 (KJV): And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and saith unto them, Receive ye the Holy Ghost:
WEB: "he breathed on them, and said to them ... Receive the Holy Spirit"
Job 33:4 (KJV): The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.
WEB: "The Spirit of God has made me, and the breath of the Almighty gives me life"
Jesus breathes on the disciples as he gives the Spirit. Job sets "the Spirit of God" and "the breath of the Almighty" side by side.
John 7:38 (KJV): He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water.
WEB: "from within him will flow rivers of living water"
John 7:39 (KJV): (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
WEB: "But he said this about the Spirit"
Isaiah 44:3 (KJV): For I will pour water upon him that is thirsty, and floods upon the dry ground: I will pour my spirit upon thy seed, and my blessing upon thine offspring:
WEB: "I will pour water on him who is thirsty ... I will pour my Spirit on your descendants"
John explains the "rivers of living water" as the Spirit. Isaiah 44:3 sets pouring water and pouring God's spirit in one verse.
Acts 10:38 (KJV): How God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Ghost and with power: who went about doing good, and healing all that were oppressed of the devil; for God was with him.
WEB: "God anointed him with the Holy Spirit and with power"
1 John 2:27 (KJV): But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
WEB: "the anointing which you received from him remains in you"
1 Samuel 16:13 (KJV): Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward. So Samuel rose up, and went to Ramah.
WEB: "Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him ... Yahweh's Spirit came mightily on David from that day forward"
Samuel anoints David with oil, and the Spirit of the LORD comes on him "from that day forward". In the New Testament the anointing is with the Holy Ghost itself (Acts 10:38; Luke 4:18 quoting Isaiah 61:1). 1 John 2:20 has "an unction from the Holy One" (WEB "an anointing").
Ephesians 1:13 (KJV): In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
WEB: "you were sealed with the promised Holy Spirit"
Ephesians 4:30 (KJV): And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
WEB: "in whom you were sealed for the day of redemption"
Paul says believers are sealed with the Spirit. 2 Corinthians 1:22 also says God "hath also sealed us".
2 Corinthians 1:22 (KJV): Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
WEB: "who also sealed us, and gave us the down payment of the Spirit in our hearts"
2 Corinthians 5:5 (KJV): Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.
WEB: "the down payment of the Spirit"
"Earnest" is the KJV's word for a deposit that promises the rest; the WEB says "down payment". Ephesians 1:14 calls the Spirit "the earnest of our inheritance" (WEB "a pledge").
In John 3:8 the same Greek word is translated both ways: Bible Hub's interlinear for John 3:8 shows pneuma for "wind" at the start of the verse and Pneumatos for "the Spirit" at the end, and its entry for Strong's 4151 gives the word's first sense as "a current of air, i.e. breath (blast) or a breeze". The Spirit's gifts are on the gifts of the Spirit and its fruit on the fruit of the Spirit.
Spirit or spirit: who decides the capital S?
The translators do: the capital S is their choice, not a fixed part of the name. The King James Version prints "Spirit" with a capital 169 times and "spirit" in lower case 336 times; the World English Bible prints 320 and 276.
The same words can go either way in one translation. The King James Version prints Joel 2:28 as "I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh" and Peter's quotation of it in Acts 2:17 as "I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh". The World English Bible capitalises both. In 65 verses the World English Bible has a capital Spirit where the King James Version has only a small s (44 of them in the Old Testament, such as Genesis 6:3, "My spirit shall not always strive with man"); the reverse happens in 5 verses. "My Spirit" with a capital is 2 times in the KJV and 15 in the WEB. 9 rows in the table (numbers 15, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 and 26) are printed in lower case every time in the KJV. For every use of the word, see spirit.
What do these counts leave out?
They leave out every verse that refers to the Spirit by "he", "it" or a lower-case "my spirit" without a title, since the counts match English words. Raw rows such as the Spirit of God and the Spirit of the LORD include a few verses where the words may mean breath, which the notes name. The list itself is a choice: this page includes a phrase when a verse uses it of God's Spirit, or when it is often read that way, and marks the second kind "readings differ". Doctrines about the Spirit, such as the Trinity, are taught from these verses in different ways by different traditions, and are outside what a count can show.
Questions about the names of the Holy Spirit
What are the names of the Holy Spirit in the Bible?
This page lists 27, among them the Holy Ghost (Holy Spirit), the Spirit of God, the Spirit of the LORD, the Spirit of Christ, the Spirit of Jesus Christ, the Spirit of truth, the Comforter, the Spirit of adoption, the Spirit of life, the eternal Spirit, the Spirit of grace and the seven Spirits of God. By the King James count, 6 are found only in the Old Testament, 18 only in the New, and 3 in both.
Why does the King James Bible say Holy Ghost instead of Holy Spirit?
In older English, "ghost" meant a spirit or soul. The Online Etymology Dictionary says Old English gast meant "soul, spirit, life" in Biblical use, and that the sense "disembodied spirit of a dead person" is attested from the late 1300s. The King James Version uses both: "Holy Ghost" 90 times and "Holy Spirit" 7 times. Bible Hub's interlinears show the same two Greek words behind both, in Luke 11:13 (Holy Spirit) and Matthew 28:19 (Holy Ghost).
How many times is the Holy Spirit mentioned in the Bible?
The phrase appears 97 times in the King James Version (90 "Holy Ghost" and 7 "Holy Spirit", in 96 verses) and 96 times in the World English Bible. Other names add more: the KJV has "the Spirit of God" 26 times, "the Spirit of the LORD" 31 times and "the Spirit" standing alone 82 times.
What does Comforter mean in John 14?
Comforter is the King James word for the Greek parakletos. Thayer's Greek Lexicon, on Bible Hub, defines it as "summoned, called to one's side, especially called to one's aid". Jesus uses it of the Holy Spirit in John 14:16, 14:26, 15:26 and 16:7, and the World English Bible translates it "Counselor" in all four. The fifth use, 1 John 2:1, is about Jesus Christ, where the KJV says "advocate".
What are the seven Spirits of God in Revelation?
They are named in four verses, Revelation 1:4, 3:1, 4:5 and 5:6, and Revelation does not explain them beyond calling them seven lamps of fire (4:5) and the Lamb's seven eyes (5:6). Barnes' Notes says their meaning cannot be settled "with certainty". Matthew Poole's Commentary and the Jamieson-Fausset-Brown commentary read them as the one Holy Spirit; Poole also reports readers who take them as seven angels (Revelation 8:2).
What symbols does the Bible use for the Holy Spirit?
The Bible uses 8: dove, fire, wind, breath, water, oil and anointing, seal and earnest (down payment). Each is tied to the Spirit in a verse: the dove at the baptism of Jesus (Matthew 3:16), tongues of fire at Pentecost (Acts 2:3), wind (John 3:8; Acts 2:2), breath (John 20:22), rivers of living water (John 7:38-39), anointing (Acts 10:38; 1 John 2:27), the seal (Ephesians 1:13) and the earnest (2 Corinthians 1:22).
