The names and titles of Jesus, with counts
The table lists 25 New Testament names and titles of Jesus and 3 Old Testament prophecies, marked below. "Most in" is the book with the highest King James count; the last column is a verse where the title is used of Jesus.

How this page decides what to count
Rows with a rule beside them leave out the verses where the name refers to someone else. High priest and Saviour are raw counts. The notes on Christ, Son of God, King of kings, Alpha and Omega and morning star name verses where the words are used of someone else or by someone else. Choosing which titles are names of Jesus is a judgment: this page lists a title when a New Testament verse uses it of him, plus three marked prophecies. Old Testament names of God are on the names of God page.
- Jesus: 984 matches in the KJV New Testament, less 4 in verses that name someone else. Those are Jesus called Justus (Colossians 4:11), the sorcerer Bar-jesus (Acts 13:6) and Joshua in Acts 7:45 and Hebrews 4:8, where the WEB prints Joshua.
- Christ: the 571 includes the 198 "Jesus Christ" and 58 "Christ Jesus" rows. Those phrases are not extra mentions on top of it.
- Son of man: New Testament only. Ezekiel has "son of man" 93 times, where it addresses the prophet, as in Ezekiel 2:1.
- Rabbi and Master: only where someone speaks to or about Jesus. Rabbi is 8 raw matches in the KJV and 4 after that rule. Master is counted with a capital M in the four Gospels.
- Lord alone is left out. The KJV New Testament prints it with a capital L 682 times, for God, for Jesus and for masters in the parables, as in Matthew 18:26. No simple rule separates them. Lord Jesus is counted instead.
Which name of Jesus appears most?
Jesus is the most-used name, 980 times in the King James New Testament, then Christ at 571. These are the 12 highest counts from the table.
Jesus is used most in John (256 times). Christ is used most in 1 Corinthians (69), and "Jesus Christ" most in Romans (27). High priest and Saviour are raw counts. Of the 58 uses of "high priest", 16 are in Hebrews, which gives the title to Jesus. The rest are in the Gospels and Acts, mostly the high priest in Jerusalem.
Which Gospel uses Son of man most?
Matthew does, with 32 of the 88 times the King James New Testament prints "Son of man".
The four Gospels hold 85 of the 88. The other 3 are Acts 7:56, Revelation 1:13, Revelation 14:14. The World English Bible prints "Son of Man" with a capital S 84 times. It uses a small s in a few verses, such as Revelation 1:13, and those are not counted for the WEB.
The 7 "I am" sayings in John
The 7 sayings below are verses in John where Jesus says "I am the" and a title. 5 of them come more than once, counting the short forms noted on each card.
KJV: And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.
WEB: Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will not be hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.
John 6:48 repeats it as "I am that bread of life".
KJV: Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.
WEB: Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life.”
John 9:5 repeats it. In Matthew 5:14 Jesus tells his listeners "Ye are the light of the world".
KJV: I am the door: by me if any man enter in, he shall be saved, and shall go in and out, and find pasture.
WEB: I am the door. If anyone enters in by me, he will be saved, and will go in and go out, and will find pasture.
John 10:7 has "I am the door of the sheep".
KJV: I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep.
WEB: I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
John 10:14 repeats it.
KJV: Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
WEB: Jesus said to her, “I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me will still live, even if he dies.
Said to Martha before Lazarus is raised.
KJV: Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.
WEB: Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me.
Said to Thomas.
KJV: I am the true vine, and my Father is the husbandman.
WEB: “I am the true vine, and my Father is the farmer.
John 15:5 repeats it as "I am the vine".
See the words bread, light, resurrection and vine for every verse that uses them. Variants such as "I am the living bread" (John 6:51) are not counted on the cards.
What these counts leave out
The counts find titles by their words in English, so a verse that refers to Jesus as "he" or "the man" is not counted. Raw rows such as high priest and Saviour include other people and God. The list itself is a choice: other phrases, such as the Holy One of God or the bridegroom, could be added by the same rule. Of the three prophecy rows, Isaiah 7:14 is the one Matthew 1:23 quotes. "Prince of Peace" never appears in the New Testament, and the KJV New Testament never prints "Messiah".
