The Bible never mentions masturbation. The word is absent from the World English Bible and the King James Version. The passage most often cited is the story of Onan (Genesis 38:8-10), but the text is about a man who refused to give his dead brother's widow a child and was judged for that refusal, so many Christian writers do not read it as a verse on masturbation. What the Bible does address is lust. Jesus says that looking at a woman to desire her is adultery in the heart (Matthew 5:28), and Paul calls believers to self-control and to flee sexual immorality (1 Corinthians 6:18, 1 Thessalonians 4:3-5). Christians disagree: some say the act is sinful because it usually involves lust, and others say it is not addressed and depends on the thoughts behind it. The verses below set out what Scripture says on lust, self-control and forgiveness.

“You have heard that it was said, ‘You shall not commit adultery;’ but I tell you that everyone who gazes at a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.

"If your right eye causes you to stumble, pluck it out and throw it away from you. For it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish, than for your whole body to be cast into Gehenna. If your right hand causes you to stumble, cut it off, and throw it away from you. For it is more profitable for you that one of your members should perish, than for your whole body to be cast into Gehenna."
"And if thy right eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell. And if thy right hand offend thee, cut if off, and cast it from thee: for it is profitable for thee that one of thy members should perish, and not that thy whole body should be cast into hell."

For sin will not have dominion over you. For you are not under law, but under grace."
"Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, that ye should obey it in the lusts thereof. "I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."

The Bible does not say. Christians who believe it is a sin argue that it is almost always joined with lust, which Jesus condemns (Matthew 5:28), and that it conflicts with self-control (Galatians 5:23). Others say Scripture is silent and that the question turns on what a person is thinking and whether the habit rules him (1 Corinthians 6:12). Both groups agree that lust is sin and that a believer is not condemned (Romans 8:1).
Probably not. In Genesis 38:8-10 Judah told Onan to father a child for his dead brother Er, and Onan spilled his seed on the ground so that the child would not count as his. The text says what he did was evil in Yahweh's sight, and the context is his refusal of that duty. The act described is withdrawal during intercourse, not masturbation.
Jesus teaches that lust is adultery of the heart and that it is better to lose a member than to fall into hell (Matthew 5:27-30). Job made a covenant with his eyes not to look at a young woman (Job 31:1), Paul tells Timothy to flee youthful lusts (2 Timothy 2:22), and Colossians 3:5 says to put to death sexual immorality, impurity and evil desire.
Yes. If we confess our sins, God is faithful and righteous to forgive us and cleanse us (1 John 1:9), there is no condemnation for those in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1), and as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions (Psalm 103:12). Hebrews 4:15-16 invites us to come boldly to the throne of grace because Jesus sympathizes with our weakness.
